“With a fully global perspective, Reiss tackles everything from
the controversy of graffiti artists selling and marketing their art on a
mainstream (and commercial) platform to the vigilante citizens obsessed
with the art form’s end.” –URB Magazine
BOMB IT is one of countless documentaries about the art of graffiti.
The film starts out like most other graff flicks with a history of the
culture’s roots in Philadelphia and New York during the 70s & 80s.
The film then starts to take its own form as it travels into the present
day and documents some of graffiti’s most creative and brave from
around the globe.
BOMB IT stops in LA, NY, Phily, SF, Tijuana, London, Paris,
Amsterdam, Barcelona, Hamburg, Berlin, Cape Town, São Paulo, and Tokyo
and features interviews and art from old school legends and current
favorites such as Taki 183, Cornbread, Stay High 149, T-Kid, Cope 2,
Zephyr, Revs, Os Gemeos, KET, Chino, Shepard Fairey, Revok, and Mear
One. Even outspoken critics of graffiti get a share of screen time as
police, snitches, business owners, and public officials give their
opinion of the outlaw art form. But make no mistake, this is definitely a
pro-graff film.
Towards the end the movie also discusses how the once demonized
activity is now being used by mainstream and commercial interests to make money
for the very powers that simultaneously criminalizes it. At the same
time the best aspect of this movie is that it reminds us that graffiti
is still a largely subversive and underground art and just how many
artists, from all around the world, are making sure graffiti stays true
to its gritty roots.Equipped with with a diverse perspective, unique stories, and a dope
soundtrack of international Hip-Hop, BOMB IT is a good addition to any
graffiti video collection...rhhr.org
