Over the last couple of years, and a string of acclaimed EPs and
12″s, Zinc has estab- lished his self-dubbed ‘crack house’ sound as a
force to be reckoned with. Rather than simply offering his own take on
an existing UK house sound, it takes more of a synthetic approach,
drawing heavy influence from Zinc’s long running history in drum &
bass and UK dance music. So his vision of house is rough, energetic and
uniquely London in nature, propelled by abrasive blasts of sub-bass and
percussion that draws equally from house, garage, funky and drum &
bass.

His new Only For Tonight EP finds him working vocals into that
template, smoothing the edges and crafting tracks that play sweetness
off against raw power. Standout track ‘Only For Tonight’, featuring
vocals from Sasha Keable adds a wistful edge to an otherwise bris- tling
house track, and ‘Feeling My Way’ repeatedly builds to crescendo before
plunging into hailstorms of chopped breakbeats. The EP’s other four
instrumental tracks offer a range of perspectives on Zinc’s current
sound: the grinding house of ‘Overdrive’ and ‘Family Riddim’ are joined
by the electro-leaning chug of ‘Plugtastic’ and the virtuosic ‘Forest
Gate Funk’, whose whirling breaks again hint back to Zinc’s history in
drum & bass. It’s the most wide-ranging of his crack house
transmissions to date...rinsefm
