Gary Taxali’s “Unforget Me”

Gary Taxali’s work (first featured in Hi-Fructose Vol. 4) is more interested in literary culture than pop culture. Elements of advertising and comics enter his paintings through vintage-inspired typography and characters that evoke the Sunday papers of yore. The artist often tints his surfaces with an off-white hue that resembles the thin pages of worn hardcovers. Yet all these appropriated elements come together under a singular aesthetic and personal narrative that, as Taxali describes, aims to illustrate the imperfections and flaws of the human condition. Taxali currently has an exhibition titled “Unforget Me” at Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York City through March 22. Take a look at the work in the show before the exhibition comes down later this week...by Nastia Voynovskaya
