BUZZorHOWL/ Chestnut Road – Split 7″ (Brassneck)

This is the third release I have heard from the Brassneck stable, and consistency is the word here, as this completes a golden triple of excellent records. This split brings together BuzzOrHowl from the north-west of England with France’s Chestnut Road. I recently reviewed the No Marks/ Hyalin split and the said Hyalin feature members of Chestnut Road, and this is kind of in the same vein. With Hyalin I felt like I was transported to the early nineties back to the sounds of Seaweed, Dinosaur Jr etc., Chestnut Road wear their UK influences a bit more prominently. There are some fantastic guitar melodies on here, wrenching passion and tunes out of those six strings. Add to that some gritty vocals that carry the tune and drop some harmony vocals in here and there, and a rock-solid rhythm section and all is well in Chestnut Road. Moving closer to home, despite the name BUZZorHOWL sound nothing like the Minutemen. These cats feature former members of some bands I remember fondly, Drive and Jailcell Recipes so I was pretty excited to check these out. I was expecting some damn catchy anthemic punk rock tunes, with a hardcore or even a post-hardcore touch, and the Buzzers don’t fail to deliver. “Little Cop” starts off on a real high and doesn’t let up, the guitars are pushed to the front of the mix giving you plenty to listen to, and the vocals are the icing on the cake. Their second contribution “Overesque” is an instrumental tune that takes an almost Shellac-esque guitar sound, lots of angular sharp edge to it, building up a repetitive catchy riff that digs itself in. Some instrumentals feel like they are missing something whereas others you don’t to stop and this is definitely one I could listen to for far longer than the three and a bit minutes. Another winnner from Brassneck. Tom Chapman
