Kelle – Respirator / Radiophobia

ProgRam continues its slew of releases this year with some more international goodness, this time from Kelle, hailing from Hungary. Kelle has a number of releases on Syndrome Audio, Fokuz and Celsius among others, arguably lesser known labels, but ones that happily give Kelle’s back catalogue integrity. Kelle’s style leans towards the deeper side of Drum & Bass and even though ProgRam’s mandate is to release more underground sounding tracks from lesser known artists this release is something different from the label.

The A side, Respirator, is a heavy, techy track that switches things up regularly throughout, keeping things varied and interesting, creating a sense of hectic progression to mayhem. The drums flit between the claps that we hear in the intro and the faster sounding, warpy ones which kick in when the track gets heavier; the bass goes from pulsating, to a waspy sounding heavier line and a rumbling sound which brings the track home. This is a glitchy, schizophrenic track which hits hard, aiming to knock the wind out of you one way or another, either with its grunty bass or with the way it flits about like a moth in search of the light.

Radiophobia takes the sense of impending that is touched upon in Respirator and turns it up a notch. The track starts out with radar pings, ghostly sounds and warped, echoing laser stabs to build up the tension into a raucous drop of a heavy bassline, a dirty synth and steppy, stabbing drums. A recipe for destruction which evolves, with cinematic touches creating the sense that something has burst out of the darkness and given chase to the dancefloor. Radiophobia has similarities to Respirator but holds back a bit on the hectic frame of mind and creates a booming behemoth of a track which should hopefully knock you about a bit.

Kelle has made two heavy tracks which showcase her abilities well and will hopefully get dancefloors moving. Without wanting to be a stirrer here, it seems worth mentioning that this release has caused a bit of commotion among some internet people because apparently it relies quite heavily upon Enei’s sample pack to make up the tracks. Personally, I don’t think this is too great a problem, if this is true, of course (I haven’t got the sample pack). Maybe it shows a bit of a lack of imagination on Kelle’s part, but sampling is a massive part where Drum & Bass came from so it’s hard to kick up too much a fuss about this and Kelle makes good uses of these sounds, wherever they’ve come from. Either way, there’s nothing like a bit of controversy surrounding a release!
For me, this is certainly one of ProgRam’s more interesting and perhaps daring releases and I’m quite a fan of it and will be keeping an eye out for Kelle from here on in. Respirator / Radiophobia is available to buy now on vinyl and digital.
