CunninLynguists – Strange Journey Volume 3
The third instalment of the CunninLynguists Strange Journey mixtape series arrives after a lengthy 5 year break, and 3 years since their last studio LP. The concept remains intact from the previous episodes - a loosely interpreted road trip across the states, though international and intergalactic travel is not ruled out. The new twist on volume 3 was that the fans could “A&R” the project, voting for their preferred guest artists, song topics, beats and collaboration combinations.
The result of the Crowdsourcing approach is an album that appeals directly to CunninLynguists die hards, but it's also surprisingly coherent and holds more of an album vibe to it than the previous Journeys. The group’s humour is evident throughout, coming to the fore on standout tracks like Drunk Dial, while more introspective tracks like Make Me Cry add some much needed weight and balance. The essence of Strange Journey Volume 3 is all about pleasing the fans, which they have no doubt done....
