Howard-Yana Shapiro is the Chief Agricultural Officer for Mars Inc, the multi-billion dollar company probably best known for M & Ms and Snickers. It also makes Pedigree Pet Food and Uncle Ben’s Rice and is one of the largest privately held companies in the United States and one of the largest food companies in the world.
Shapiro says Mars, Inc defines itself as an agriculture company and so he focuses on all aspects of the supply chain. "Everything has to have a view that (leads) to a sustainable future,” Shapiro says of the Mars vision. Shapiro sold his organic seed company, Seeds of Change, to Mars in 1997. He says the core beliefs of that company, preservation of bio-diversity and sustainable agriculture, are now part of the Mars culture. And he has some big concerns about the future of the world.
