Eastcolors Interview

Russia’s EastColors has already featured on a wide range of labels, from Ram to Symmetry, from Revolution to BlackOut and now Addictive Behaviour. These two new offerings showcase his style, dedication and ability to warm the crowd and the dancefloor with ease. Electronica starts with an urgent, jazz-influenced drum fill, with electronics bouncing around the drumline. This flows into a build which drops into some Metalheadz-sounding craziness. The track works out into an industrial floor-filler, with sci-fi, cinematic touches and a bounding, insistent rhythm. EastColors has produced the track brilliantly, everything coming together as it should do to create one of the finest pieces of drum & bass you’ll hear this year or any year. Heavy, hard and ready to blow, Electronica is simply essential.

EastColors has been dropping some heavy hitters this year, including his recent ‘Electronica / Mudguard’ release on Addictive Behavior. dnbblog recently caught up with him to ask a few questions.
Hi Eastcolors, how are you?
Hey! Everything’s good, been spending lots of time in studio over the past two weeks.
Can you tell the readers a little bit about yourself?
My name is Andrey and I’ve been producing dnb music under the alias Eastcolors for the last 4 years.
What is the Drum & Bass scene like in Russia?
It’s not as big as I would like, but there are some world known guys, names like Enei. Hopefully the Russian dnb scene will rise up and you will hear more new names soon.
Are there any artists from Russia that we should keep an eye out for?
The guys called Andy Pain & Z Connection sent me their stuff and I was very impressed, definitely ones to watch!
What are you currently using to make your tracks; what is your DAW of choice?
My DAW for last 4 years was Logic Pro, since i didn’t like Logic X i moved to Presonus Studio One, which is absolutely great! But i still haven’t completely dropped Logic, it’s like 80% of my work occurs in S1 and 20% in Logic.
Who or what inspires you to make music?
Well, it’s a hard question, so many everyday life experiences inspire my sound. It could be music, art, traveling, films and whatever. But i think mainly it’s music, techno, jazz and old school dnb…
Can you give us a little background to your latest tracks ‘Electronica / Mudguard’?
‘Electronica’ is a pure bass roller, dark and synthetic sounding. ‘Mudguard’ is in more of an oldschool style, with a natural feel.
I imagine you must have felt like you have made it with releases on Ram and Symmetry, what do you think will be the next stand out moment for you?
The next step which is really important for me is writing an album, and I not chasing for top labels to release it. So yeah, the next ‘I’ve made it’ thing would be a finished album.
How do you spend any free time away from Drum & Bass?
Working on my day job or spending time with friends, just living like any regular guy. I try to do something in my studio everyday which leaves me little spare time.
What are your plans for the rest of 2014?
The main plan is a solo Eastcolors album, hopefully it will be finished in 2014
